About the role:
The principal purpose of the post is to direct and manage the undergraduate General Practice placement in year six of the six-year Imperial MBBS programme. This placement allows students to explore general practice and is mainly taught in practices outside of London. General practice contributes to the year 6 finals examinations and the placement lead will contribute to that.
The successful candidate will work with General Practitioner tutors and hospital and other medical school teachers to organise the day to day running of the placement and plan its future development. The appointee will be expected to participate generally in the Department’s activities as agreed and may take on other duties in agreement with the Director of Undergraduate Primary Care Education.
Teaching takes place both in General Practices and at the Medical School and encompasses a broad range of contemporary teaching and assessment methods.
What you would be doing:
Teaching Responsibilities
- Be the academic co-ordinator for the General Practice Student Assistantship (GPSA) placement
- Liaise with GP tutors to ensure a high-quality placement is delivered at each practice.
- Provide GPSA introductory and closing sessions for students.
- Teach across other courses where appropriate.
- Provide formative and summative assessment to medical students. This will at various times include giving feedback, constructing questions, performing clinical assessments, and marking coursework and examinations.
- Review students’ work and performance and provide educational and pastoral support where needed.
- Evaluate placement and teaching activities.
- Develop teaching materials and aids related to the programme of undergraduate teaching.
- Provide reports on teaching, learning and assessment activities as required.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Assist with the recruitment of and support for tutors for the GPSA placement.
- Hold regular GPSA team meetings; brief and debrief teachers and contribute to TaCTIC and other training sessions to facilitate their development.
- Work with the Medical School where appropriate to integrate teaching across placements.
- Work with the medical school to ensure any new material is mapped to the existing primary care curriculum.
- Work with the Director and Deputy Director of Undergraduate Primary Care Education to develop the placement.
Publication and Career Development
The post holder is encouraged to develop educational and research skills through research, publication and obtaining a higher degree.
- Contribute to publications (for example placement guides, websites, newsletters etc.) when requested.
- Undertake research and evaluation projects and present work at meetings, conferences and in appropriate professional journals.
- Gain awareness of current initiatives and trends in education both nationally and internationally.
What we are looking for:
- Certificate of Completion of Training in General Practice or equivalent
- A postgraduate qualification in Medical Education
- Significant experience within medical education
- Experience in managing a teaching programme
- Demonstrable leadership experience
- Evidence of scholarly activity including research, applied critical reasoning, conference presentation and peer-reviewed publication
- Good understanding of the organisation of general practice and current developments in primary care
