Research Associate (Fixed Term)

The Department of Paediatrics invites applications for a highly motivated Research Associate to lead an innovative 24-month study funded by Action Medical Research. This role focuses on examining the host-microbiome relationship in children requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation, aiming to identify early immune and microbial changes predictive of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).

VAP, a severe lung infection occurring 48 hours after mechanical ventilation, affects over 10,000 critically ill patients annually in the UK. It increases hospital stays, costs (~£8,000 per patient), morbidity, and mortality rates by 10 - 50%. Diagnosing VAP is notoriously challenging due to its complex pathophysiology, reliance on subjective assessments, and low-yield diagnostic tools. This delay hinders timely intervention and exacerbates the risk of antimicrobial resistance.

This project aims to transform VAP diagnosis by investigating how immune responses and microbial changes influence infection onset. The insights gained will inform future diagnostic tools and therapeutic trials, improving outcomes for vulnerable paediatric patients.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in data science, immunology, or inflammation research. They will possess advanced tissue culture skills, familiarity with standard laboratory techniques, and a proven ability to analyse and present data to publication standard alongside a collaborative approach and strong interpersonal skills. Experience with machine learning and genomic/metagenomic data analysis is desirable. Candidates who have submitted but not yet been awarded their PhD may be considered, with appointment at the Research Associate level conditional upon obtaining their degree within six months of start date.
