Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer for the following undergraduate modules:

• Hate: on the power of the negative (Level 4)15 hoursTeaching Tuesdays, 6-9pm 5 weeks from February – March 2025

• Racism and Antisemitism (Level 6)15 hoursTeaching Wednesdays, 6-9pm, 5 weeks from February – March 2025

• The Self, Society and the State (Level 5)30 hoursTeaching Wednesdays, 6-9pm, 10 weeks from April - July 2025

You will have excellent knowledge of sociology, psychosocial studies and social theory, with a particular focus on antisemitism, racism and hate. Plus, you should be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).

Further to the person specification, an essential requirement for this role is the ability to address difficult, emotive and divisive topics sensitively and inclusively in the classroom.

Indicative topics to be covered are as follows:

  • Hate – Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, Frantz Fanon, researching hate;
  • Racism and Antisemitism – racial nationalism, radical antisemitism, conspiracy theories, the wages of whiteness, imperial whiteness, the colonial boomerang and multidirectional memory;
  • Self, Society and State – core texts of social theory from Marx to Butler, with flexibility to suit lecturer’s specialisms (current texts include Goffman, Bourdieu, Berlant, Gramsci, Foucault, Mbembe).

Salary and benefits

Payment is based on an hourly rate for contact hours worked. The specific rate depends on length of continuous service with the College and includes of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay. This hourly rate of £68.13 per hour is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract

Full-time, 6 month fixed-term contract. Teaching pattern varies to Tuesday & Wednesday evenings 6-9pm.
