The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Advanced Rheological Instrumentation with a particular emphasis on developing a new custom rheological accessories in collaboration with Netzsch UK, a leading rheometer manufacturer. The successful applicant will be expected to devise enhancements to a new technique developed in Durham, termed rheodialysis. The researcher will integrate a rheodialysis device into rheometers of the partner, Netzsch GmbH, allowing automated chemical change during rheological testing. The successful candidate will work towards an impactful methodology publication and will construct rheodialysis devices to be shared with Netzsch’s customer base for further testing.

This post is fixed term for a duration of 9 months as the funding is available for this fixed period only;

The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1st March 2025

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

Qualifications

  1. A good first degree in Physics or a related subject.
  2. A PhD (or be close to submission) in Physics or a related subject.

Experience

  1. Experience in conducting high quality academic research.
  2. Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals.
  3. Demonstrable ability to present research papers at national and international conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community.
  4. Knowledge of Netzsch rheology software
  5. Experience in developing advanced rheology instrumentation
  6. Ability to carry out data analysis in Python, Labview and Matlab

Skills

  1. Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings.
  2. Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines.
  3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  1. Experience of working with rheodialysis techniques.

  1. Demonstrable ability to plan and manage independent research.
