At the University of Plymouth we have a proud 150-year heritage and a sustained legacy of success, in advancing knowledge and transforming lives. We are midway through our ten-year strategy – ‘University 2030: A Future of Excellence’. This transformational journey is maximising our current core strengths, including our areas of internationally leading research, our quality teaching, our leading-edge facilities, our location and the priorities of our city and region.

The Board of Governors is the most senior decision-making body in the University and is pivotal in supporting the University’s mission of ‘transforming lives and advancing knowledge’. It brings together independent governors with wide-ranging external expertise, alongside staff, students, and members of the senior executive. Collectively, the Board of Governors oversees the delivery of the University’s objectives, the setting of its strategic direction and the upholding of its values.

The Board has a well-established Finance Committee which is responsible for oversight of the University’s financial strategies and systems, as well as oversight of the University’s Strategic Implementation Plan. Current members of the committee are experienced senior leaders and come from a variety of professional backgrounds.

We are now looking for an experienced and qualified finance or audit professional to join the Finance Committee as a co-opted member and use their skills and knowledge to contribute constructively and strengthen the expertise of the committee. The Committee typically meets four times a year, with each meeting lasting around 3 hours, with meetings held either at the University or online, during working hours.

Becoming a co-opted member of the Finance Committee presents an opportunity to impact positively on the lives of our learners, staff and community while giving back from your personal and professional expertise. Joining the Finance Committee as a co-opted member is a lesser commitment than joining the Board as a governor and this opportunity might suit someone who is interested in stepping into a Board / NED role at a later date but does not have the time or perhaps the experience to take on that role quite yet.  The appointment to the Finance Committee would normally be for an initial period of 3 years.

The University is a charitable organisation and Board / committee members do not receive payment for their work, however any expenses incurred are remunerated, including travel, childcare etc.

At the University of Plymouth, we believe that diversity enriches our community and strengthens our leadership. We warmly encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds. Whether you bring unique cultural perspectives, professional expertise, or lived experiences that can shape our university’s future, your voice matters. Together, we can foster innovation, inclusion, and excellence as we continue to make a meaningful impact in education and beyond. If you’re passionate about contributing to a dynamic and forward-thinking institution, we’d love to hear from you!

For an informal discussion please contact Julie.kendall@plymouth.ac.uk who will be pleased to arrange a discussion with the University Registrar and Secretary.
