About the Role:

This newly created position offers an exciting opportunity to raise our profile and ensure more individuals and organisations benefit from our educational opportunities, research, and ideas.

As Communications Manager, you will identify compelling stories within the Business School community and share them widely, especially with the media. You will build relationships with academics, students, and alumni to spotlight inspirational achievements and cutting-edge research.

The successful candidate will have experience as a journalist or communications professional, demonstrating creativity and intellectual curiosity. You will independently develop and execute communications plans, set measurable goals, and evaluate their effectiveness.

You will join a friendly and dynamic External Engagement team, with opportunities to broaden and develop your professional skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Head of Communications, academics, and King’s Corporate Communications team to identify and share impactful stories.
  • Monitor the news agenda and identify opportunities for King’s Business School to engage with key media outlets.
  • Write and edit various materials, including news articles, blogs, and award entries, to highlight the school’s achievements.
  • Collaborate with the communications coordinator and social media officer to disseminate content across digital platforms.
  • Contribute to student communications by working with the Student Experience team.
  • Use analytics to assess the effectiveness of communications strategies and make adjustments as needed.
  • Develop and maintain a database of faculty expertise to connect researchers with media opportunities.
  • Provide basic media training for academics and assist with preparation for media appearances.
  • Assist with shared resources, planning, and budgets within the communications team.
  • Step in for the Faculty Head of Communications as required.

The above responsibilities are indicative and may evolve to meet the department’s needs.

About You:

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree or equivalent professional experience in journalism, media relations, or communications.
  • Excellent command of English with the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
  • Proven ability to develop and pitch stories in journalism or communications.
  • Experience creating engaging content for digital platforms with attention to accuracy.
  • Strategic and collaborative mindset, capable of building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Understanding of EDI issues and their relevance to higher education and communications.
  • Intellectual curiosity and an interest in current affairs, business, and economics.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Professional qualification in journalism, communications, or PR.
  • Experience in higher education or other high-profile sectors.
  • Skills in social media management and content creation.
  • Additional technical skills such as video or podcast creation.
