About us

UCL Division of Biosciences has an outstanding international reputation, ranking joint 6th in the QS world university rankings 2024 for biological sciences. We host a community of over 500 staff covering a diverse portfolio from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies, to ecology and the environment. Much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, and we sit at the nexus of a broad range of interdisciplinary collaborations across UCL. We are now recruiting Lecturer / Associate Professor position in Ecology, Climate Change & Health to support our cross disciplinary research in Ecosystems and Biodiversity Research, based at the new UCL East campus.

The People and Nature Lab unites Bioscience staff together with those from the UCL Faculty of Population Health; Departments of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, Geography, Computer Science and The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment. This unique interdisciplinary environment will tackle challenges posed by biodiversity loss, global ecosystem degradation and climate change, for a more sustainable relationship between people and nature. Based within the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, the role is aligned to our new cross-disciplinary Masters programmes and other teaching opportunities.

About the role

The new role will support the growth of BioSciences’ new People and Nature Lab at UCL East through conducting cross-disciplinary research, teaching, outreach, and entrepreneurial activities in applied ecological and biodiversity research. We are particularly interested in candidates with interests in understanding the interconnectedness of ecosystems, climate change and human health - ‘One Health’ approaches, applying cutting edge genomic, computational or AI tools to ecological and epidemiological questions in any group of organisms.

This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 60% on site.

Appointment at Associate Professor level, Grade 9 (salary £66,711 - £72,370 per annum), is dependent upon having relevant experience as defined in the Person Specification; if this is not the case, appointment will be at Lecturer level, Grade 8 (salary £52,487 - £61,534 per annum).

If you have any queries about the role, please contact Professor Kate Jones for any informal queries about the post. If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online or have any queries about the application process, please contact the HR Administrator.

About you

You will have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, and a strong research portfolio that is linked to the People and Nature Lab’s activities particularly around ‘One Health’, applying genomic, computational, AI or other cutting-edge tools to understand ecological determinants of human population and/or wildlife health. You will also have previous research-based teaching experience, with a strong interest in interdisciplinary working, translational activity, and widening participation.

A full list of essential and desirable criteria is provided in the accompanying person specification.
