Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher trained in bioinformatics to join the School of Natural Sciences in 2025.
As Postdoctoral Researcher you will assist in the analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data produced from our collaborating partners as part of the AdapTB project. AdapTB is an international consortium (six partners from four countries) funded by ICRAD/BBSRC.
The project focuses on the molecular determinants of mycobacterial adaptation and host-pathogen interactions, with the aim of informing bovine tuberculosis control.
Infectious disease in farmed animals is a threat to the agricultural industry and to overall food security. Bovine tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease caused primarily by M. bovis (Mb). Our knowledge of Mb – host interactions is limited and this project aims to address this knowledge gap by identifying Mb factors that influence infection outcomes.
Dr Irene Nobeli leads the computational biology work package in AdapTB, to which this position is attached.
As Postdoctoral Researcher you will be involved in analysing genomic, transcriptomic and gene essentiality data, originating either from public databases or from the experiments carried out by the remaining five consortium partners (some data has been produced, but more is expected in the last 18 months of the grant).
You will be supported in the analysis by the PI, Dr Irene Nobeli, and you will also have the opportunity to co-supervise, if you wish, Masters students working on projects relevant to the consortium aims.
As part of our team, you will have an opportunity to interact with leading research groups in tuberculosis research across four countries, and your work will help guide and inform experiments in our collaborators’ labs.
This opportunity would build on PhD or postdoctoral research experience in computational biology/bioinformatics, with a focus on the analysis of large omics datasets, and the development of computational methods and pipelines for the statistical analysis of these data.
If this role sounds like the perfect fit for you, apply with us today.
Salary and benefits:
Actual £13,091 rising to £14,905 per annum (£43,636 rising to £49,683 pro-rated, FTE), Grade 7 of the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated weighting/allowance that applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
Birkbeck offers a competitive salary and pension scheme, 31 days paid leave, flexible working arrangements and some of the most generous benefits in the HE sector, all while being located right in the heart of Bloomsbury, Euston, London.
