The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Birkbeck, University of London aims to recruit an Associate Lecturer to deliver the module Abstract Algebra 2 in 2025.

As Associate Lecturer A you will teach the module:

You will have in-depth knowledge of number systems, proof techniques, logic and mathematical reasoning and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).

To be successful, you will have in-depth knowledge of key algebraic structures such as groups, rings, fields and vector spaces.

Teaching material will be made available to the successful candidate. The role involves delivering in person teaching sessions and setting and marking assessments. The role may also involve further developing the teaching materials, including pre-recorded video.

Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:

  • You should have a first degree in pure mathematics or in a directly related subject.

Salary and benefits

Payment is based on an hourly rate for contact hours worked. The specific rate depends on length of continuous service with the College and includes of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay. This hourly rate of £68.13 per hour is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract

Part-time, 3 month fixed-term contract. Teaching Thursday 6-9pm (April to July 25). Closing date: Wednesday 27 January 2025. Interview date: Monday 10 February 2025.
