About the role

Muscular dystrophies are a group of disorders characterised by progressive skeletal muscle weakness and wasting, severely compromising quality of life for sufferers. The third most common inherited muscular dystrophy is facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). We investigate the pathomechanisms, biomarkers and potential therapies for FSHD and have now identified several pathways that are deregulated in FSHD that cause muscle dysfunction and inefficient muscle repair (Banerji and Zammit (2021). Pathomechanisms and biomarkers in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy: roles of DUX4 and PAX7. EMBO Mol Med 13(8):e13695. doi: 10.15252/emmm.202013695).

This project will further investigate the role of such pathways in pathology, with an emphasis on those controlling metabolism. Performance of the work will benefit from skills in cell biology, molecular biology, protein analysis skills and bioinformatic skills.

The researcher will be based in the Zammit group and be responsible to Professor Zammit.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 28/08/2026 starting no sooner than 3rd March 25.
