Research Fellow in Hydrogen Fuel Technology, Propulsion & Power

UCL - Mechanical Engineering

Location: London
Salary: £43,124 to £51,610
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 19th December 2024
Closes: 12th January 2025
Job Ref: B04-05779

UCL Mechanical Engineering is renowned for its impactful and diverse research with direct industry relevance, recently judged as "world-leading" or "internationally excellent". Within the department, the Energy and Environment division excels in experimental diagnostics related to practical combustion systems such as gas turbines and IC engines.

We are offering a three-year post for a Research Fellow in Hydrogen Fuel Technologies in Propulsion and Power which will be based at our Bloomsbury campus. This is a Grade 7 role remuneratingup to £43,124, including the London Weighting allowance.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join a specialised research group dedicated to developing advanced combustion technologies for power and propulsion, using alternative energy vectors. This role involves experimental research in advanced optical diagnostics and thermoacoustics, specifically focusing on hydrogen combustion in gas turbines.

The successful candidate will develop new design and operational principles to mitigate risks associated with hydrogen use in gas turbines. This includes investigating flame behaviour, combustion dynamics, and emissions in lean hydrogen combustion, as well as developing combustion concepts that stabilize flames while reducing risks of flashback and instabilities. The research will emphasize design, optical diagnostics, combustor scaling, and industrial implementation of hydrogen combustion, thereby creating high-fidelity data for future low-emission gas turbine engines.

This position is part of a UKRI-funded fellowship (HOPE), supported by multiple industrial partners. It may also offer opportunities to assist in undergraduate teaching activities and mentor PhD students. The role provides a platform for close collaboration with scientists from both academia and industry.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-quality research in experimental combustion, focusing on hydrogen combustion.
  • Engage in the UKRI-funded project, executing relevant work packages and liaising with project partners to deliver milestones promptly.
  • Disseminate research findings in high-impact journals, conferences, and industry meetings.
  • Meet project-related reporting requirements.
  • Mentor graduate students and participate in occasional teaching activities.

About You

We are looking for candidates with a strong research background in mechanical engineering or a related field, with expertise in hydrogen combustion and combustion diagnostics. Essential qualifications include knowledge of hydrogen combustion phenomena and a proven record of high-quality research, demonstrated through publications in recognised journals. Experience with optical laser diagnostics such as PLIF and PIV, and the design, development, and operation of lab-scale combustion facilities is required.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit a statement in support of their application. Without this statement, applications will not be considered.
