Postdoctoral Research Associate in Dynamic Marine Cell Wall Hydrogels - Grade 7

University of Liverpool - Faculty of Science and Engineering - School of Engineering - Department of Materials, Design and Manufacturing Engineering

Location: Liverpool
Salary: £39,105 to £45,163 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 16th December 2024
Closes: 13th January 2025
Job Ref: 088293

Are you enthusiastic about exploring the fascinating interplay between biology and mechanics? We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to develop methods for informing rheological characterisation of living and model algal cell walls in dynamic and physiological environments. This exciting project, funded under the UKRI Cross Council Responsive Mode Scheme, aims to reveal the mechanical properties of the cell walls of marine algae, a remarkable living material that constantly adapts to rapid and extreme cyclic changes in salinity and hydrostatic pressure. This unique research opportunity revolves around the fields of cell wall biology, biophysics, rheology and instrumentation. It forms part the LILACS consortium (‘Looking Inside Living Algal Cell Walls – A Soft Matter Approach’) between three UK universities (Liverpool, Imperial and Durham) that is dedicated to exploring, explaining and exploiting the molecular diversity of marine cell walls from a cross-disciplinary perspective.  The position will be hosted in the Department of Materials, Design and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Liverpool and you will work closely with colleagues across all three institutions, playing a central role in leading, devising and conducting original experiments.

You will have a PhD degree in soft condensed matter physics, biophysics or a related field.

The post is fixed term for 2 years (subject to funding confirmation).

If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
