Working in the Haematology Department within the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee (HGNC) team led by Dr Elspeth Bruford, this post is for a technical specialist to work on the HGNC project's IT infrastructure and applications for the public website (www.genenames.org), and for internal applications for the team. The post holder will report to Senior Technical Specialist Kristian Gray.
Standardised gene naming is of crucial importance as a supporting service to the fields of genomics and clinical medicine in its aim to provide unique, and where possible informative and stable, gene nomenclature for human and other key species. During this time of rapid expansion within the field of genomics, it is imperative that researchers and clinicians have access to standardised gene symbols to allow safe and accurate data exchange and analysis. The role holder must ensure this data is always easily accessible, and freely available to all with no restrictions imposed on access or the use of the data.
For this exciting role, we are seeking an ambitious developer with experience in coding in JavaScript and a scripting language such as Python, with an understanding of object-orientation. You will be looking to build a career in web development, full stack development, cloud computing and/or bioinformatics. You will work within a team in which the key stakeholders are your colleagues.
This position would be ideal for a candidate with experience in developing webtools and websites, and knowledge of developing and maintaining relational databases. They would have experience in utilising and researching multiple different coding languages and frameworks, and be willing to learn new techniques.
