We are currently looking for an experienced Diagnostic Microbiology Technician to join our small but busy veterinary diagnostic laboratory. You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide a diagnostic microbiology service to both on-site hospitals and external clients. The service receives a wide variety of samples from both large (farm and equine), small (dogs, cats etc.) and exotic animals. Previous experience of working in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory is essential with familiarity in veterinary analysis being advantageous but not essential.

You will need experience in all aspects of Diagnostic Microbiology, including staining techniques for bacterial and fungal identification, sample processing to include selection of culture media, good plating out technique, bacterial/fungal identification, interpretation of culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), reviewing and releasing of reports to clinical validation. You will also be expected to participate in maintaining consumable stocks, calibration of automated analysers, internal QC and external QA schemes We follow guidelines for Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interpretation, where we continuously update our susceptibility program in line with these guidelines. 

You should have a science degree or equivalent, be flexible in your approach and work to a high standard (both individually and within a team). Previous experience in following correct procedures for Health & Safety within the laboratory environment, including the ability to write and maintain all relevant documentation is also essential.

Previous experience with the VITEK MS PLUS and VITEK2 would also be advantageous.

In addition, there will be an expectation to participate daily in sample reception duties and general tasks within the unit. You should possess strong communication skills, the ability to maintain a high level of attention to detail and work in an efficient and organised manner. Working unsupervised and a willingness to learn new techniques would be expected, whilst familiarity with other veterinary diagnostic disciplines would be desirable.

Within the diagnostic laboratory, computer literacy is essential as this position involves the use of a LIMS system whilst cataloguing and processing veterinary samples, including the recording, entering and reporting of results directly to pathologists and/or clinicians.
