The main duties of the postholder will be to support the needs of the department with student projects and research by manufacturing items, such as experimental rigs and individual projects and help with their installation. The postholder would also be able to maintain our laboratories with items such as combustion engines, wave simulation tanks and bespoke equipment by repairing faulty equipment and manufacturing components.

The postholder will be required to work on-site full-time as the post is not hybrid.

The postholder will be able to work on complicated mechanical engineering projects in good time and under minimal supervision and have the ability to lead to completion projects once they have agreed the instructions. To be approachable, to work within a team and be open to offer advice and direction when requested to fellow staff members and students in the form of individual and group meetings, email and telephone. The postholder must engage with staff and students in discussion, as presented in sketches and preliminary drawings, and having understood the requirements of the component or rig, advise the student or staff member on modification and further development of the design to increase ease of manufacture and reliability of the component and system after it has been manufactured. To also assist the student and staff in assembly of the device and with modifications to improve it and it’s smooth and reliable operation. Examples of advice that would be given are choice of materials to improve strength and smooth operation or to work in certain conditions and modifications to avoid leaks or breakdowns. Support of the department’s wider operations as required from time to time which could involve regenerations of laboratories and lecture rooms and also large scale projects that have specific deadlines. This may involve flexibility with working hours to reach deadlines on occasion. Although employed by Chemistry, the appointee will be based in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
