Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £56,921 to £65,814, with potential progression once in post to £85,544. 

Role Summary

Lead the implementation of the University's Digital Accessibility Policy, ensuring compliance with PSBAR and WCAG. Guide senior leadership on regulatory requirements and the impact of non-compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Stay updated on digital accessibility developments and legislation.
  • Oversee accessibility testing and improvements.
  • Monitor digital accessibility across the University.
  • Assess and improve satisfaction levels of students and staff with disabilities.
  • Advocate for effective digital solutions for disabled users.

Main Duties

  • Shape strategic direction and operational plans for Digital Accessibility.
  • Build relationships with senior stakeholders and act as a contact for accessibility compliance.
  • Lead and manage accessibility projects.
  • Evaluate and mitigate accessibility risks.
  • Provide consultancy and advice on accessibility.
  • Coach and develop staff in Digital Accessibility.
  • Monitor accessibility levels.
  • Chair Digital Accessibility Steering Group meetings.
  • Advise on suppliers' accessibility obligations.
  • Identify and drive accessibility improvements across the University.
  • Promote a culture of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Person Specification

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent level qualifications) or extensive experience of working in a complex organisation.
  • Authoritative knowledge of digital accessibility best practice, the WCAG, the PSBAR and other regulatory requirements. May have certified qualifications from the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), but this is not a mandatory requirement.
  • Will be responsible for successful accessibility testing and auditing of products and services which requires up to date knowledge and skills in some or all of the following areas: 
    • WCAG 2.2 Level AA and AAA
    • Keyboard testing
    • Alternative text authoring
    • Visual assessment
    • HTML markup assessment
    • Screen reader testing (JAWS, NVDA)
    • Mobile app testing (VoiceOver, TalkBack)
    • Voice control software
    • Magnifiers
    • Switches
  • Ability to exercise a substantial degree of independent professional responsibility and discretion.
  • Substantial experience of leading and managing staff, possibly through intermediate managers, and acting as the expert authority in the area.
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write for different audiences and for different purposes, and to produce and analyse complex source material, information and data.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proven experience of solving complex problems.
  • Experience of using substantial expertise to influence a range of stakeholders and senior management.
  • Ability to develop and implement an organisational strategy.
  • Proven record of developing innovative and practical solutions to deliver a strategy.
  • Some experience of financial management would be desirable but not mandatory.
