About the Role
The Centre for Theoretical Physics (CTP) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) invites applications for a fixed-term 18-month Postdoctoral Research Assistant position in Theoretical Physics. Applicants should have a strong research record within theoretical physics and show potential to contribute strongly to the CTP’s research goals, particularly in the broad area of scattering amplitudes. This includes: applications to classical gravity; loop amplitudes in gauge theories and gravity; colour-kinematics duality and double copy; string theory amplitudes; and celestial holography.
About You
The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in theoretical physics and have expertise in modern scattering amplitudes research. They are expected to work with CTP members, and bring expertise in some of the key areas mentioned above. They will be required to have strong analytical skills, to be an effective team player and to be able to work independently.
Candidates close to completion of their PhD will initially be appointed in the junior research training zone of the salary scales. Grade 4 (£37,472-£38,082 per annum).
About the School/Department
The School of Physical and Chemical Sciences consists of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Chemistry. It is one of five schools in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The School is an exciting and dynamic environment, home to over 530 undergraduate students, 70 postgraduate taught students, and 130 teaching and research staff. Our research is highly collaborative, working with colleagues across all three faculties and supported by partnerships with industry, NHS and other stakeholders.
The CTP is home to one of the leading groups in amplitudes research, with current members including Andi Brandhuber, Ricardo Monteiro, Bill Spence, Gabriele Travaglini, Congkao Wen, and Chris White. Our research interests are broad, with recent focus on the topics previously mentioned. The position will allow the successful candidate to become part of a highly active research centre focused on vibrant areas of theoretical physics.
About Queen Mary
At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.
Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.
We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.
Benefits
We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities.
