The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) delivers high quality and distinctive educational programmes for adult learners, predominantly studying on a part-time basis, for either personal enrichment or professional development. ICE aims to ensure that the expertise and resources of the University of Cambridge are made available to all students, irrespective of their previous educational achievements.
The MSt in Architecture (degree apprenticeship) is prescribed by the ARB and validated by the RIBA at Parts 2 and 3. It was launched in 2020 and our first apprentices registered as architects earlier this year. Apprentices attend three annual intensive residential fortnights in Cambridge and continue to work on their portfolios between these. To support their progress through the three-year Part 2 component of the course, we are seeking experienced architects and architecture teachers to act as academic advisers.
Our academic advisers, who will be Senior Teaching Associates, have three roles. They act as mentors and supervisors, providing advice and support approximately monthly as apprentices move up through design and other modules; they are Professional Studies Advisors for PEDR purposes; and they also manage and record each apprentice's quarterly progress reviews and check the monthly timesheets in accordance with by the funding agency's regulations.
Reviews and supervisions are generally conducted online although we prefer at least one review a year to be conducted in person. Our academic advisers also attend crits at the Department of Architecture in Cambridge which take place three times a year. A 0.2fte contract would entail mentoring a group of about 12 apprentices but longer contracts are possible.
The successful candidate will be an architect with a recognised profile in architectural education and / or professional Part 3 mentoring.
Informal enquiries are encouraged and can be made to the course leader, Professor Timothy Brittain-Catlin, at tjb43@cam.ac.uk. Questions about the application process may be directed to: HR@ice.cam.ac.uk.
Please upload in the Upload section of the online application (1) your CV; (2) a Covering Letter of no more than 1,500 words, outlining how your skills and experience would contribute to the continued success of the course and its future development. If you upload any additional documents, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application.
The closing date for applications is 11 December 2024. Interviews are expected to take place in early January, however this is subject to change.
