About us

The National Addiction Centre (NAC), incorporating the Addictions Department at King’s College London, is one of the most productive addictions research groups in Europe. We also explore an important area of health-related study as the Addictions Clinical Academic Group (CAG) within  King’s Health Partners, and form one of the core areas of the Academic Health Science Centre that brings together university partners King’s College London with the NHS from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital, and Guy’s and St Thomas’. RAND Europe rated our work on Substance Abuse Research as leading in the field, and Substance Use is one of the identified themes of the  NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health which is based at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). 

About the role

The Research Assistant will work with Professor Sir John Strang and research colleagues in playing a crucial role in co-ordinating and supporting the RESCU-2 project. They will work closely with research sites, collaborative partners and colleagues to facilitate the effective completion of research activities.  The role requires prior experience working either in addiction clinical services or in accommodation services and desirably, the understanding of opioid overdose and its prevention and management. The post-holder is required to have good organisational skills, excellent communication abilities and the capacity to work as part of a team and independently. 

This is a fixed term post until 31/08/25. This is a full time or part time post (17.5 - 35 hours per week).

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Undergraduate qualification in relevant topic area, with good qualification (e.g. 2.1) or evidence of equivalent relevant experience and/or training 
  • Experience working with addiction clinical services and/or accommodation services and/or experience working with people with severe and enduring mental health problems 
  • Ability to maintain study deadlines and attention to detail for careful record keeping 
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also, the ability to work self-directed 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with diverse audiences 
  • Computer literate with advanced Word, Excel, and statistical software skills

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of issues around opioid overdose and related methods of intervention, prevention and management  
  • Ability to solve problems pragmatically using own initiative
