About the role:

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to investigate next generation batteries such as “anode-free” or “anode-less” Li cells. The focus of this research project is to use in situ and other characterisation techniques such as time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, etc. to characterise battery properties such as SEI layers on anode-less substrates, and physical properties (thickness, Young’s modulus, etc.) of the SEI layers. This project will include both experimental and computational research activities. Rechargeable batteries are of significant interest to a wide range of industries such as electric transportation.

What you would be doing:

You will be working in an intellectually stimulating research environment with scientists working in both aligned research areas as well as a wide variety of other research areas. You will be a conscientious and innovative scientist with a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, physical chemistry, chemical engineering or relevant science and engineering discipline, and strong background in experimentation and characterisation. Excellent organisational and communication skills are essential.

What we are looking for:

  • Research Associate: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, physical chemistry, chemical engineering or relevant science and engineering discipline.
  • Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, physical chemistry, chemical engineering or relevant science and engineering discipline.
  • Research experience (e.g. characterisation, assembly, testing, etc.) in “anode-free” or “anode-less” Li cells.
  • Hands-on experience of using characterisation techniques such as ToF-SIMS, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, etc. to characterise battery properties. Human Resources Division
  • Hands-on experience in using and developing in situ and operando characterisation techniques.

*Candidates who have not yet officially been awarded their PhD will be appointed initially at Research Assistant (with a salary range of £43,003 to £46,297.
