Birkbeck, University of London, is currently looking for a Demonstrator to support the teaching course on Sequence Analysis and Omics. This is an excellent opportunity to support the teaching team within the School of Natural Sciences.
As Demonstrator you will teach the following module:
Sequence Analysis and Omics covers classic topics in the analysis of biological sequences, with an emphasis on algorithms and their applications to problems in modern biology. Aspects of molecular evolution from sequence to structure and function are also discussed.
The second part of the module covers basics of high-throughput technologies, known collectively as “omics" (proteomics, genomics and transcriptomics) with a focus on next-generation sequencing data. Students are introduced to the basics (both theory and practice) of how omics data are obtained, stored, accessed and analysed in bioinformatics. The practicals include the use of existing software and servers, alongside the use of Unix commands, bash scripts and the R programming language (in Rstudio).
As a Demonstrator, you will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck students, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies. You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching, and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge.
Please refer to the person specification (available on the university's website, accessed by the 'Apply' button) for selection criteria. Interviews will be held the week commencing 9th December.
