Lecturer A/35 hours
The University of Buckingham is rightly proud of its distinctive features. It is the only independent university in the UK with a Royal Charter. It pioneered and continues to champion the first accelerated (two-year) undergraduate degree; and it provides students with a uniquely personalised learning experience through its small-group academic tutorial system and exceptional pastoral care provision.
The Department of English is looking to appoint a Lecturer in English and Creative Writing, to commence in April 2025. English is a small department dedicated to providing the best academic and pastoral support to our students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. We are seeking a lecturer to augment our current expertise in Early Modern, Victorian, and Contemporary literature. While we are flexible with period, our ideal candidate would be confident teaching poetry, theory, gender, and race, to cover such modules as Reading Gender, Rewriting Empire, Eras of English, and Fiction and Theory. Candidates with experience of teaching creative writing at UG and PG will have an advantage. There will also be scope to introduce a specialist subject module in the candidate’s area of research. At MA level, our students are all undertaking research degrees, and our new colleague would be expected to supervise in areas related to their area of expertise. The role will also involve contributing to the administration of the programme and undertaking other relevant duties in support of the programme and faculty.
Duties will involve delivering current content at BA and MA levels and assisting the team with developing innovative new delivery methods, programmes and modules. The postholder will also be expected to develop their research agenda, helping to consolidate the team’s reputation in the field. As a full member of the team and of the Faculty of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, the postholder will also assist with general pastoral support to students; and inputs to discussions regarding the faculty’s onward development.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Peter Sloane, Programme Director for English, on email at peter.sloane@buckingham.ac.uk.
The closing date for applications is Friday 6th December. It is anticipated that interviews will be completed in the following three weeks.
Please note: if successful, any offer is subject to standard checks, including qualifications, eligibility to work in the UK on a permanent basis and DBS (if applicable)
