The role
The School of Computer Science at the University of Bristol is seeking to grow our thriving and talented community. We have a long-standing track record for world-leading AI, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, and recent successes place us at the forefront of UK AI research and teaching. We host Isambard AI, the UK’s first national AI supercomputing facility, lead two of the UK’s national AI Research Hubs (in Collective Intelligence and Information Theory) and two Centres for Doctoral Training in AI (in Practice Oriented AI and Interactive AI), and are launching new AI teaching programmes. In addition to further strengthening our talented research teams in AI, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, we are also making hires in Cybersecurity, Cryptography, Verification, Immersive and Creative Technologies and High-Performance Computing, at both established and early career levels.
Relevant research at Bristol includes work in animal biometrics, egocentric vision, human activity recognition, and fundamental problems in multimodal machine learning. We solve interdisciplinary challenges in collaboration with researchers in environmental and life sciences, creative technologies, and robotics, and hold joint appointments with industry including Google Deep Mind and Amazon. The postholder will collaborate with members of the School and help to drive forward our research in machine learning and computer vision, developing new opportunities for research and education.
What will you be doing?
We expect the postholder to become a member of the School’s AI Academic Team, and to strengthen our activities in the School’s Machine Learning and Computer Vision (MaVi) research group, while having the opportunity to work with other research groups as appropriate.
The postholder will contribute to the University’s impressive research record, as demonstrated in the most recent REF exercise where the School was ranked 7th in the UK for Computer Science research. The School prides itself on its academic quality and its collegiality. We are incredibly proud of our outstanding working environment with a dedicated professional services team, a very high standard of achievement in research and education, and a culture of inclusivity and kindness.
You should apply if
Candidates will have a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline or may have equivalent experience in industry. They will have a track record of publishing in top academic venues and applying for external funding appropriate to their career stage. The potential for leadership, undertaking research collaborations with colleagues from top international labs, and collaborating on impactful translation of ideas with relevant industrial partners is desirable. The successful candidate will be able to design and deliver excellent teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and will be committed to making the most of growing opportunities in this area.
