Applications are invited for a permanent full-time post as Lecturer in History of Medicine and/or Health at the Centre for the History of Science Technology and Medicine (CHSTM), University of Manchester. Keen to diversify our teaching and research portfolio in line with funder interests and institutional priorities, we invite applications that complement current staff research interests. We are keen for the successful candidate to develop and lead on CHSTM’s contributions to the University’s Healthier Futures research platform. We especially (but not exclusively) encourage applications from candidates with expertise in history of mental health and mental illness since 1800. While we are open to work on all geographical areas, we welcome applications from colleagues whose research focuses on colonial, postcolonial or decolonized contexts. Candidates will combine their proven expertise in the history of medicine, health or illness with a lively interest in the histories of science and technology and their communication, as our Centre is dedicated to the integrated study of modern history of STM, along with science and health communication.

The successful candidate will possess a compelling research vision with strong potential to develop an excellent research portfolio attractive to research funders, with a view to building research leadership in their chosen field. They will have developed a competitive publication record in accordance with their career stage, a sustainable strategy for publishing further peer reviewed academic work, and viable plans to apply for research funding. They will be fully supported in these endeavors by experienced members of our Centre. They will also be keen to organize seminars and conferences to maintain and further develop their network of research contacts, and to enhance our Centre’s standing on the national and international scholarly stage.

The post holder will support and enhance our teaching portfolio at undergraduate and postgraduate (MA/MSc and PhD) levels. We expect them to be able to take on the coordination of one or more of CHSTM’s long-established core undergraduate units, ‘Bodies in History’, ‘From Cholera to Covid’, or ‘Madness and Society in the Modern Age’.

In addition to delivering innovative classroom teaching, the successful candidate will play an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation and project supervision, and take on pastoral roles as an academic advisor. The role holder will be supported in developing specialist course units at undergraduate and postgraduate level, based on their research expertise.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity, and be encouraged, to recruit and supervise PhD students.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
