The University of Manchester has been at the centre of discovery for the past 200 years, and, as we look forward, our research students will take on the biggest challenges facing society.

Through our pioneering research groups, centres and institutes in The Faculty of Humanities, our Bicentenary PhD Studentships will proudly support 6 PhD students on fully funded studentships to begin their research study in September 2025.

About the Bicentenary PhD Studentships

  • Receive a prestigious fully funded studentship covering tuition fees and an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (2024/25: £19,237 per year) for four years.
  • Tackle a project you are passionate about in one of our key research themes. guided by an expert supervisory team.
  • Become part of our Doctoral Academy and join a vibrant and diverse postgraduate research community of 1,000+ researchers.
  • Benefit from excellent training and research facilities, as well as a vibrant and supportive environment that will maximise your growth as a researcher.
  • A research training support grant (RTSG) will help you broaden your horizons with the opportunity to travel for collaboration, conferences and development opportunities.

Bicentenary PhD Studentship Projects

Our Bicentenary projects in the Faculty of Humanities have now been announced. These projects will invest into developing researchers of the future across our key themes and priorities:

  • AI, New Technologies and Society,
  • Digital Media and Culture,
  • Inequalities (including Ageing, Children and Young People, Employment and Productivity, Environment, Ethnicity and Racism, Health and Social Care and Poverty and Deprivation, Migration, Governance),
  • Resilient Communities.

Projects are now available and are open for applications until Friday, 24th January 2025.
