About us

The Slade School of Fine Art is an art school where staff and students approach contemporary art practice, and the history and theories that inform it through experimentation, imagination and research-oriented practice.

In 2025, the Slade is launching a new BA Art and Technology programme, which is interdisciplinary degree focused on the interconnections between art practice and a range of new and disruptive technologies. It will also open a new studio space at UCL East to support students, academic staff and researchers to explore the intersection of art, technology and society through critical enquiry and studio practice.

About the role

This is an academic position for a practicing artist working in the field of computational or technology-driven art and will be based at the UCL East (Stratford Campus).

Some of the teaching responsibilities of this role will include leading on the delivery of creative computing modules, and studio and workshop teaching in one-to-one and group situations. There will be tutorial responsibilities for a group of students, including providing pastoral care, assessment feedback and self-evaluation reports.

Alongside teaching responsibilities, they will hold important roles within the BA Art and Technology programme such as Year Lead, or Exam Board Chair.

About you

Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge:

The successful candidate will be an artist or creative practitioner making work involving and informed by computational practices or contemporary digital technology and possess a nuanced and critical understanding of the relationship between art making, technology and culture. The candidate will have experience of teaching in higher education and creating inclusive and equitable learning environments, including the decolonisation of thought and the promotion of diversity with art and technology. The candidate must also have a research profile with outputs of suitable quality for submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Skills and Abilities:

The candidate will be skilled at teaching in a variety of group and one-to-one modes including lectures, critiques, seminars works and tutorials and have the ability to respond to students' wellbeing and pastoral needs and have an approachable and flexible way of working with students with a wide range of abilities and backgrounds. The candidate must be proficient in machine learning systems and data practices, with a critical understanding of wider cultural and social impacts. Competency in programming and problem-solving skills in languages and environments relevant to creative computing, such as JavaScript, Python, Bash, PowerShell, Git, as well as physical computing with Arduino and sensors, embedded systems, and associated circuitry is essential. The candidate must have good written and verbal communication skills and have experience of organising events such as student exhibitions, talks, public events an d partnership activities.
