About us
SELCS is a world-leading centre for teaching, research and public engagement, focusing on the literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, film and other aspects of the cultures associated with the languages we teach (Danish, Dutch, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Old Norse, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish). Our taught programmes are innovative and interdisciplinary; academic colleagues and students engage with many urgent concerns facing the world today by understanding Europe’s languages, cultures and histories and their impact globally.
We are home to specialists in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American literature, film and culture. We offer BA degrees in Hispanic Studies, Latin American Studies, Spanish with Management, and Spanish with Film Studies, along with a number of combined language degrees, including a BA in Portuguese and another modern language.
At postgraduate level we offer an MA in Language, Culture and History: Hispanic Studies, and doctoral training in several fields.
About the role
The post holder will contribute to teaching at undergraduate level and will teach approximately 160 contact hours of Spanish language, culture and current affairs weekly in term-time.
They will prepare and deliver seminars on Spanish language and culture; design and adapt lesson plans; and mark student coursework and examinations as allocated by the Programme Director of SPLAS and the Head of SELCS.
This is a full-time maternity cover post, fixed-term for the period 13 January 2025 to 6 June 2025.
The successful candidate will be expected to take up the position on 13 January 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.
About you
The successful candidate will have a postgraduate qualification (Master’s degree or equivalent) within the area of Spanish Language Teaching, Spanish Linguistics, or Spanish culture.
They will have expert knowledge in the area of Spanish language teaching (including language-teaching methodologies) as well as complete fluency in Spanish and English. They will have experience of teaching Spanish language at university level, as well as experience of teaching and assessing Spanish grammar, oral work and translation to and from Spanish.
They will have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills when dealing with both colleagues and students, as well as a proven ability to use Moodle (including quizzes and assignments) or equivalent online learning technologies.
