The role

This is an excellent opportunitiy for an ambitious and able health or social researcher with expertise in or an affinity with public health to work with senior academics complete research projects that are part of the NIHR Public Health Interventions Response Team (PHIRST Insight).   The postholder will be involved in conducting scoping literature reviews, preparatory work for evaluation studies including public and community involvement and engagement activities, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, building relationships with relevant stakeholders, assisting with the writing of funding applications, evaluation study protocols, ethics applications and evaluation study reports and journal papers. Applicants will also be involved in conducting evaluation studies.

The post is advertised as a fixed-term until 31st July 2025.

The Centre for Public Health hosts the Public Health Intervention Research Studies team (PHIRST-Insight) which works with Local Authorities and third sector organisations to evaluate novel public health interventions and Bristol’s membership of The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) School for Public Health Research (SPHR) which undertakes research into public health with an emphasis on what works practically and meets the needs of policy makers, practitioners and the public.

What will you be doing?

The post-holder will be involved in scoping literature reviews, preparatory work for evaluation studies including public and community involvement and engagement activities, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, building relationships with relevant stakeholders, assisting with the writing of funding applications, evaluation study protocols, ethics applications and evaluation study reports and journal papers. Applicants will also be involved in conducting evaluation studies.

You should apply if

It is expected that applicants will have a good honours degree (minimum requirement is a 2.1) in a relevant subject and an MSc with a merit or distinction in a relevant discipline. Applicants will need to have had experience of applied and evaluation methodology, and a good understanding of quantitative and qualitative approaches commensurate with the level of post for which they are applying.

Candidates will need enthusiasm, show attention to detail, have excellent writing skills and a proven ability to work both independently and within a multi-disciplinary team. As the post could involve working with children and young people or vulnerable adults the successful applicant will be required to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and children’s and adults’ barred list check and appointment will be dependent upon successful clearance. The successful applicants will require a range of mixed methods research skills in relation to public health. Applicants will need to have had experience of applied and evaluation methodology, and a good understanding of quantitative and qualitative approaches commensurate with the level of post for which they are applying.

Candidates will also need enthusiasm, show attention to detail, have excellent writing skills and a proven ability to work both independently and within a multi-disciplinary team.
