The School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition (SMMSN) has a long history of developing novel imaging technologies especially in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In 1980, the University of Aberdeen performed the world’s first diagnostic MRI scan of a patient, using a scanner invented and built in here. Based on this legacy, the University of Aberdeen continues to promote and push the boundaries of MRI technology development.

The Aberdeen Biomedical Imaging Centre (ABIC) leads the University’s effort in MRI research through two main pathways:

  • The first focuses on the exploration of new contrast mechanisms below 0.2T, by leveraging Field-Cycling Imaging (FCI), which rapidly varies the scanners magnetic field strength during a patient’s scan. A unique, clinical FCI scanner has recently been installed in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and will be used to unravel new disease biomarkers in patients across a wide range of conditions including stroke, breast and brain cancer, musculoskeletal and metabolic disorders. 
  • The second focuses on developing clinically relevant, quantitative imaging at current clinical field strengths. A state-of-the-art 3T MRI scanner, dedicated to clinical research, is housed adjacent to the FCI system allowing comparison of FCI and standard imaging as well as allowing translational research in patients with more acute conditions.

This joint effort aims to lay the foundations for future MRI systems that complement current clinical imaging technology by developing portable, dedicated, and accessible MRI.

The main purpose of this role is to extend our current work on brain health and small vessel disease assessment using novel Field-Cycling technology. This will include the development of optimised 3D pulse sequences for FCI neuroimaging, collection of multi-field MRI data from ultra-low fields to 3T and the analysis of images for the extraction of quantitative parameters such as R1 (1/T1.) and small vessel lesion load.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 scale, £37,999 - £41,421 per annum and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
