Annual Leave: 30 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield 

Join our dynamic Systems Operations team, part of the Library and Computing Service at the University of Hertfordshire, where we are committed to providing leading IT support and services. This opportunity has arisen due to our ongoing expansion and commitment to maintaining a robust and secure IT infrastructure.

Main duties and responsibilities

We are looking for a skilled Linux Administrator to join our dynamic IT team. As a Linux Administrator, you will be responsible for managing and maintaining our Linux-based systems and servers. Your role will involve ensuring the stability, security, and performance of our infrastructure, as well as providing support to our development and operations teams. 

Your main duties will include:

  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers and systems.
  • Monitor system performance and ensure reliability and availability.
  • Implement security measures and perform regular security audits.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Manage system backups and disaster recovery plans.
  • Collaborate with development and operations teams to support application deployment.
  • Automate routine tasks using scripting languages or automation tools.
  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies..

Skills and experience required

  • Proven experience as a Linux Administrator or similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems (e.g. OES, CentOS/Rocky, Red Hat, SUSE).
  • Familiarity with network protocols and services (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python).
  • Understanding of security best practices and tools (e.g., firewalls, intrusion detection).
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Exposure to Windows Server Administration is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Oracle Analytics Server would be advantageous.

Qualifications required

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or Qualification in computing at a professional level or equivalent expertise and experience.
