About us
The Department of Philosophy at UCL is one of the leading philosophy departments in the UK. In the 2021 REF, 60% of our overall profile received the top grade (4*), the highest of any UK philosophy department. We offer several undergraduate degree programmes. Undergraduate first- and second-year modules largely involve a weekly one/hour lecture plus a one-hour seminar; third year modules usually consist of a weekly two-hour seminar. We offer taught master’s programmes, and a prestigious research master’s and PhD. Master’s-level modules usually consist of a weekly two-hour seminar. The department also has great advantages as a centre of research activity.
The posts are offered on an open-ended, full-time basis, with an ideal start date of September 2025.
About the role
We will make two appointments in history of philosophy, at either Lecturer (Grade 8) or Associate Professor (Grade 9) level. One appointee will have a research specialism in Kant’s theoretical philosophy.
The other appointee will have a research specialism in history of continental philosophy, construed broadly, to include phenomenology, German idealism, existentialism, critical theory, etc.
Both appointees will develop a research profile that is excellent by global standards. The appointees will teach up to four full modules each academic year, which may be at graduate or undergraduate level.
About you
Applicants should have a PhD in Philosophy, awarded before the start date of September 2025. A research specialism in either Kant’s theoretical philosophy or history of continental philosophy is essential. Experience of teaching and supervision in a higher education setting is a requisite.
