Research Fellow in Cyber Security and Privacy (Project GANNDALF)

University of Greenwich - School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences

Location: Greenwich
Salary: £37,999 to £43,878 per annum, plus £4170 London weighting per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 8th October 2024
Closes: 18th October 2024
Job Ref: 4764

The University of Greenwich and its Centre for Sustainable Cyber Security (CS2) has been recently recognised by the UK government as a NCSC Academic Centre of Excellence (ACE) in Cyber Security Research (https://www.gre.ac.uk/articles/public-relations/greenwich-recognised-as-a-centre-of-excellence-in-cyber-security-research). It is now one of only nine universities with ACE recognition by the UK government for both its performance in both research and education.

The successful candidate will join the Horizon Europe project GANNDALF, which is a high-profile international research project with 17 European partners, combining cyber security, AI, data science and law.

Through agency-to-agency data sharing mechanisms, and the deployment of a decision-support toolbox to identify cyber threats, GANNDALF will deliver a customisable and collaborative crime investigation sandbox for scenarios for sophisticated crime investigation. The particular role relates to two aspects of the project:

(a) To apply and enhance the Cyber Hygiene 2.0 vision, which encourages citizens to participate actively in the crime spotting and reporting process, without expert knowledge. It will involve a novel method for citizens recognising and reporting cyber-dependent crimes, as well as training on innovative ways to educate citizens against cyber-dependent crimes.

(b) To develop an optimisation framework that will contrast the extent and the nature of the privacy risk and its mitigation with different privacy enhancing technologies, against the operational benefit that counterfactuals bring to investigations and agency-to-agency collaborations, as we well as the associated operational cost. For this, the task will start by applying the Privacy Risk Assessment Methodology proposed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to assess the privacy impact of counterfactual explanations provided.

The post is for 18 months, and can be extended up to a further 18 months subject to performance.

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Professor George Loukas on g.loukas@greenwich.ac.uk
