Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Molecular Microbiology and Genomics.

The post is part of the European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare consortium (https://www.eupahw.eu/), an EU-funded programme aimed at controlling infectious diseases of animals and promoting animal welfare.

The post is for a full-time researcher for up to 17 months, to start as soon as possible. The successful applicants will work within the Infection and Immunity subunit at the School of Veterinary Medicine (Dr Arnoud van Vliet and Prof Roberto La Ragione).

The objective of this role is to investigate transmission of AMR within animal pathobiotic systems, using in vitro gut models and model pathogenic microorganisms, combining genomics approaches with experimental models. This knowledge will then be applied for extrapolated to concepts of AMR transmission within animal production systems, with the concepts of One Health.

The research at the School of Veterinary Medicine is at the forefront of understanding and alleviating the threats that environmental and climate change pose to health in animal and human populations. In line with the One Health philosophy, our research is highly multidisciplinary and multi-institutional.

About you

Candidates should have a relevant PhD/DPhil (or be near completion), in addition to holding a first degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Zoology, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or equivalent). The ideal candidate will have experience in molecular microbiology, genomics, and bioinformatics. A track record of publishing in high quality journals and experience of working well independently and also as part of a team are essential.

The role will suit a highly motivated candidate who is interested in addressing real-world challenges. You shall use genomic approaches to identify novel markers for bacterial pathogenesis and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

How to apply

Please submit a CV and cover letter with your application on the University Website.  For informal enquiries please contact Dr Arnoud van Vliet (a.vanvliet@surrey.ac.uk) or Prof. Roberto La Ragione (r.laragione@surrey.ac.uk).

Interviews will be held in the fourth week of October 2024.
