The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics seeks to appoint one or more Post-Doctoral Research Associates to work on data processing and science analysis for Simons Observatory (SO). SO is a next-generation Cosmic Microwave Background observatory, comprised of a single large aperture telescope (LAT) and multiple small aperture telescopes (SATs). Several SO telescopes are now operational in the Atacama Desert in Chile, with others to be added over the coming 2—3 years. The UK is a major partner in SO via the SO:UK project, led by The University of Manchester. SO:UK is delivering two of the SO SATs and a significant contribution to the SO Data Management. In addition to building the first SO:UK SAT, Manchester hosts the SO:UK data centre, a major hub for SO data processing and analysis.

The successful candidate(s) with work with Prof. Michael Brown, Prof. Richard Battye, Prof. Jens Chluba and the wider Manchester SO data centre and analysis teams on developing analysis techniques aimed at maximising the scientific outcomes of SO. The Manchester team has specific interests in primordial B-mode polarisation analysis using the SO SAT data, and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich analyses with the SO LAT. We invite applications from candidates whose interests align with any of these areas. The successful candidate(s) will work in one or both areas depending on their specific expertise and interests.

We seek candidates with significant theoretical and analytic skills and who have experience in developing and applying analysis techniques for precision CMB studies and other relevant fields. Working as part of the SO Data Management team and Analysis Working Groups, the successful candidate(s) will collaborate closely with international SO colleagues to deliver on the overall objectives of the SO project.

The starting date is 1st January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post(s) will be for three years in the first instance. This may be extended subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.

Applications should consist of a completed application form, an up-to-date CV and a Research Statement (maximum 2 pages).
