The School of Geography and the Environment, in association with St Anne’s College, invites applications for a full-time Associate Professorship in Physical Geography, with a focus on biodiversity and climate change.

The position is available from 1 September 2025, or at an earlier or later date by negotiation, and will be held in conjunction with a Tutorial Fellowship at St Anne’s College, as detailed in the job description below. The post-holder will be based at the School of Geography and the Environment and St Anne’s College, Oxford. The appointment will initially be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to retiring age following a successful review.

The successful candidate will engage in advanced research, producing high-quality publications of international significance, and will teach, supervise, and examine undergraduate and graduate students. They will contribute to the organisation and teaching of the undergraduate Geography degree at St Anne’s College and are expected to deliver high-quality lectures, classes, and small-group teaching in physical geography. Other responsibilities include administrative duties for both the School and the College, as well as actively contributing to their communities by promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.

The successful candidate is expected to have expertise and a strong research interest in biodiversity and climate change that complements the School’s existing research strengths in physical geography. Preference may be given to candidates with research and teaching experience related to long-term past climate change. They should hold a doctorate in physical geography or a closely related field, have a proven track record of high-quality, internationally recognised research and publications relevant to biodiversity and climate change, and demonstrate evidence of significant and rigorous research plans. The ability to be an inspiring and effective teacher is essential. Other selection criteria are detailed in the job description.

The combined University and College salary ranges from £55,887 to £75,044 per annum, with additional benefits including an annual housing allowance of £11,635, a research allowance of £1,235 per annum, and an additional allowance of £3,155 per annum upon receipt of the title of Full Professor through Recognition of Distinction.
