Research Associate/Fellow (Fixed term)

We are recruiting a Research Associate/Fellow for the Hydrogen Research Group currently consisting of 5 academics, 9 research fellows and 15 PhD students. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team collaborating on the optimisation of metal hydrides and/or the design of solid-state hydrogen stores and compressors. 

The role will focus on code development for the modelling of metal (complex) hydrides using machine learning techniques. The role-holder will work in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and social scientists. Candidates should have a PhD or about to obtain (or equivalent) an appropriate field (e.g. Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science) and have advanced knowledge record in atomistic computational modelling of solid-state materials using machine learning interatomic potentials. Experience on developing or adapting Python codes to train machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) of solid-state materials and using the developed MLIPs to run molecular dynamics simulations is essential. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in using ab initio density functional theory packages such as VASP, CP2K, etc.

We support early career researchers (ECRs) through incubating new ideas, flexible working, and guidance for fellowships/grant applications, ensuring our ECRs can flourish. We support our researchers to present their work at international conferences. We also look for postdoctoral researchers who will provide community-support through either supervising junior researchers, STEM outreach and/or being engaged with an EDI interest group (e.g. Women in Research and the BME Staff Network). 

There is a single post to start immediately. This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 21 months. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role
