Location: Aarhus - Denmark
Salary: Not Specified

The Department of Digital Design and Information Studies and the Center for Surveillance Studies within the School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as researcher in surveillance and health. The researcher position is affiliated with the research project ‘Human Agency and Data-Intensive Surveillance (SURVEILLANCE AGENCY)’ funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

The researcher position is a full-time and 4-year fixed-term position. The position begins on 01 January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The School of Communication and Culture is committed to diversity and encourages all qualified applicants to apply regardless of their personal background.

Project

The position is associated with the Carlsberg Semper Ardens: Accomplish project SURVEILLANCE AGENCY, which aims to introduce a new perspective foregrounding the human condition that we are not just observed objects but also subjects who experience and practice data-intensive surveillance. The health domain is particularly relevant to focus on, as it intersects with many aspects of the broader surveillance landscape.

The project aims to gain valuable insights into the broader implications and challenges of surveillance technologies by scrutinising experiences and practices within the health domain. Gaining this insight requires thorough empirical research into surveillance’s subjective, cultural, and social situatedness and the technological designs and processes enabling it. Using case studies, the project examines how we encounter surveillance through different aspects of participation in the Danish welfare society as patients, citizens and private individuals.

The Center for Surveillance Studies will host the project. Proficiency in Danish is preferred for the position.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD degree or document equivalent qualifications in a relevant field related to Science, Technology and Society Studies (STS), surveillance and health research, as well as teaching and research experience equivalent to that attained through a PhD degree. Applicants must be able to document, relevant to the position:

  • an internationally oriented research profile within STS, surveillance and health research as documented by a PhD dissertation and/or research publications
  • experience in the self-directed management of research projects
  • relevant teaching experience at university level as documented by a teaching portfolio (or equivalent documentation of teaching experience and qualifications) commensurate with the length of the applicant’s academic career
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to engage productively both within the research team and with external organisations and institutions.

Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can document

  • a track record of research publications of a high international standard commensurate with the length of the applicant’s academic career
  • experience of participation in national and international research networks
  • time spent abroad working at one or more internationally recognised research institutions
  • proficiency in Danish.

Please note that although the application process can be completed on the Aarhus University system without uploading publications or a teaching portfolio, applications that do not include uploaded publications (maximum five), as well as a teaching portfolio (or equivalent documentation of teaching experience and qualifications), will not be considered.
