The role

We are seeking to recruit a new member to the support team of the Wolfson Bioimaging Facility in Bristol University’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences - one of the best-equipped and well-established centres for advanced microscopy (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/wolfson-bioimaging/). The light microscopy team currently consists of 5 full- or part-time technical specialists working alongside 3 x EM technical specialists who work with users of our extensive suite of advanced microscopes. The new role will replace a team member leaving for a position abroad and will ensure the facility maintains and potentially extends the expert support for fluorescence imaging required by a large number of facility users who are taking advantage of its recent expansion and diversification to progress projects spanning a broad range of research areas.

What will you be doing?

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced user of fluorescence microscopy techniques from a technical or research background to join a thriving and well-resourced imaging facility, where you will support the use of advanced fluorescence microscopy in a broad range of research fields.  Your core responsibilities will be to work with other team members to provide advice, training, support and service imaging to users of the Facility’s microscopes, to ensure equipment is well-maintained and optimally used, and to advise on sample preparation and image analysis.

You should apply if

You have experience in using fluorescence microscopes that are central to the facility’s operation (including confocal, widefield and/or other microscopy systems), with a good understanding of fluorescence techniques and of biological/biomedical research, and with a keen interest in supporting diverse research projects. You should have excellent communication skills, enjoy working in a team, have a commitment to service quality and a proactive approach to work. Experience with Leica confocal microscopes and/or other systems currently housed in the facility is an advantage but not essential as training is available to adapt expertise gained with other microscopes. Strong IT skills and image analysis expertise are desirable. Experience or interest in related techniques including specialised fluorescence imaging modalities and electron microscopy would also be advantageous.
