Edinburgh Napier University is seeking to appoint a full-time Research Fellow for the prestigious EPSRC funded Programme Grant: COG-MHEAR, led by Programme Director: Professor Amir Hussain.

As a Research Fellow, you will have the opportunity to work alongside renowned academics and researchers in the School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment.

COG-MHEAR is a world-leading cross-disciplinary research programme funded under the EPSRC Transformative Healthcare Technologies 2050 Call. The programme aims to develop truly personalized multimodal hearing assistive technology. It includes academic partners from 6 other UK Universities and a strong User Group comprising industrial and clinical collaborators, and end-user engagement organisations. The role

The role involves taking a leading role in COG-MHEAR under the direction of Prof. Hussain, working on privacy-preserving and explainable AI and multimodal speech enhancement for next-generation hearing-aids and assistive technology. This will also involve management, supervision and administrative responsibilities associated with research duties.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertake world-leading research in developing and evaluating real-time multi-modal machine learning models for hearing-aid speech enhancement and naturalistic evaluation in real-world environments.
  • Manage, supervise, and administer research duties.
  • Prepare peer-reviewed publications for high-impact journals and conferences.
  • Collaborate with other COG-MHEAR project teams
  • Liaise with project researchers, collaborating companies, clinicians and end-users in the User Group, to ensure overall COG-MHEAR programme goals are met
  • Contribute to proposals to secure future research funding
  • Undertake other relevant activities under the direction of the Programme Director

Who we are looking for

A highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who brings:

  • Must be awarded a PhD degree in a closely relevant field (e.g. Machine Learning, Speech Processing, Systems Engineering)
  • Expertise in low-latency machine learning, audio-visual speech processing, hearing-aid signal processing, multi-modal speech and natural language processing, Edge AI or related areas.
  • Strong publication record in top journals and conferences
  • Proven ability to solve real-world problems independently and make original contributions to collaborative research
  • Excellent programming, quantitative research and teamworking skills
