About the role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a lecturer in human heart electrophysiology within the Cardiovascular Division of the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Faculty of Medicine.  The NHLI is at the forefront of the application of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to cardiovascular research and there is an opportunity to use electrophysiological data for more effective diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. We seek an experienced scientist with an in-depth knowledge of human heart electrophysiology and the application of AI for more effective diagnosis and treatment of arrythmias in cardiac disease who will lead a research program in this area.

What you would be doing:

The successful applicant will be based at Hammersmith in the Cardiac Function Section, NHLI, where they will be expected to develop their own research program at the intersection between the experimental and artificial intelligence areas of electrophysiology. They will be expected to drive this exciting new area of research and foster its growth in College by leading the NHLI Human Heart Tissue Programme. This is a unique programme to capture rejected donor human hearts for study in research. This “NHLI Human Heart Tissue Programme” provides an exceptional access to study heart function and has attracted a panoply of research groups that study failing and donor human heart tissue. Access to human heart tissue from donors and failing hearts provides an ideal platform for the candidate to develop a research programme to study arrythmias.

What we are looking for:

  • The candidate should have proven experience in studying whole organ and multicellular human systems
  • You will develop a broad range of research within the field of human heart electrophysiology and AI.
  • You will foster national and international scientific collaborations with other world-leading centres.
  • You will teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • You will demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regards to individual performance, academic teams, the NHLI, Faculty, College, clinical teams, and when participating in national/international initiatives.

Essential requirements

  • PhD or equivalent in human heart electrophysiology.
  • Extensive experience (commensurate with lecturer) in leading a research program at the intersection between human electrophysiology and AI that have led to published papers and major presentations.
  • Experience in tissue procurement and strategic management across multiple interdisciplinary teams.
  • Experience studying human cardiac tissue, especially whole organ and multicellular systems.
  • Experience of Training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.
  • Experience in managing, developing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate courses and modules.
  • Be able to make a significant contribution to the management and leadership of the department.
