School of Chemistry, University of Nottingham, UK

We are looking for a precision engineer to join us in the School of Chemistry Workshops at the University of Nottingham. The school undertakes research across a broad range of themes including Biological Chemistry, Synthesis and Catalysis, Molecular Bonding and Spectroscopy and Materials, supported by some of the most comprehensive analytical and technical services in the sector. It operates across several sites including: the main Chemistry Building and Biodiscovery Institute, both on University Park, and the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory on the Jubilee Campus, with our Workshops based on University Park supporting and developing equipment for research activities across all the above themes.

What the role involves:

  • Be a core member of the precision engineering Workshop Technical team, working collaboratively with Academic colleagues, Post-Doctoral Researchers, Postgraduates, and the wider Technical Team across all aspects of the school’s research areas to design, develop, construct and maintain scientific equipment to precise tolerances, using a variety of engineering materials, conventional and CNC machine tools and techniques e.g. milling, turning, fitting etc.
  • Employ and maintain Health and Safety standards throughout all aspects of your work.
  • Undertake projects where you will be required to design, manufacture and provide ongoing development of the research and departmental equipment.
  • Provide engineering technical support, ensuring day-to-day operational needs are met.
  • Support Outreach, Public Engagement and Knowledge Exchange.
  • Undertake maintenance and support of workshop equipment. 
  • Provide advice and solutions on technical specification requirements for advancing areas of research.

What we need from you:

  • The ability to undertake a range of practical and technical support activities to solve a variety of queries and issues.  The role will involve some manual handling (up to 25kg)
  • Accuracy, reliability and the willingness and adaptability to learn new skills and procedures.
  • A good level of IT skills, including MS Office suite (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint and Teams), AutoCAD/Fusion software.
  • Candidates should have excellent interpersonal, organisational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of typical engineering workshop equipment.
  • HNC or equivalent, with substantial work experience in a relevant role or a proven track record with extensive work experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.

The post is offered on full time (36.25 hours per week), fixed term contract for 2 years.
