Postdoctoral Research Scientist - Epigenetics

University of Oxford - Target Discovery Institute

Location: Oxford
Salary: £36,024 per annum : Grade 7
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 10th September 2024
Closes: 8th October 2024
Job Ref: 173142

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with experience in epigenetics, epitranscriptomics, or RNA biology to lead various projects to uncover the role of pseudouridine and pseudouridine synthases (PUS) in cancer, and explore the potential clinical application of pseudouridine in the circulating cell-free RNA for cancer diagnostics. You will join the fantastic team here at the Target Discovery Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine.

The Song research group aims to decode the chemical modifications of our genome, transcriptome, and proteome in human health and disease – cancer in particular – and translating this information into diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities that ultimately benefit patients. Recently, we developed a novel sequencing method for the most abundant RNA modification pseudouridine (bioRxiv 2024.2001.2008.574649, Nat. Methods accepted).

As Postdoctoral Research Scientist, you will be responsible for adapting existing and developing new scientific techniques and experimental protocol and testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate. You will be tasked with developing ideas for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers as well as collaborating in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters. You will also be responsible for managing your own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.

To be successful in this role, you will hold or be close to completion of a relevant PhD/DPhil in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Cell Biology/Chemistry along with relevant experience. You will have experience of communicating results clearly and logically as part of a diverse research team. You will have strong skill set in standard Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Cell Biology techniques and experience in epigenetics, epitranscriptomics or RNA biology.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 2 years and is funded by the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

Only applications received before 12 midday on Tuesday 8 October 2024 will be considered. Please quote 173142 on all correspondence.
