Project Overview

This project aims to develop sustainable elastomer nanocomposites by exploring functional nanoparticles, new elastomer chemistry and advanced characterisation technologies. The surface chemistry of nanoparticles and interface characterisation with elastomer will be studied, the structure-property-processing relationship of the rubber nanocomposites will be investigated through a suite of advanced technologies, such as atomic force microscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, rheology, and dynamic mechanochemical characterisation. The functionality and energy efficiency of the rubber products will be investigated.

The student will receive systematic trainings including polymer chemistry, rubber technology and academic skills. He/she will be working at the International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing (IINM), WMG, University of Warwick, with a full access of the world-class polymer characterisation technologies and rubber research facilities.

Essential and Desirable Student background Criteria

Candidate Requirements

  • A first class, or strong upper second class, honours degree in Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering or Material Science
  • Interest in (and preferably strong background in) polymer synthesis, polymer processing and polymer nanocomposites
  • Interest in and knowledge of rubber technology
  • Excellent English written and spoken communication skills
  • Self-motivated and excellent time-management skills
