University of Hertfordshire - School of Physics, Engineering, and Computer Science/Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics

Location: Hatfield
Salary: £37,099 to £44,263 pa by annual increments
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 6th September 2024
Closes: 30th September 2024
Job Ref: 060577

The School of Physics Engineering and Computer Science have recently secured a Research England funded project, delivered in collaboration with Cranfield, Leeds and Manchester Universities with the aim of creating a new Future Biodetection Technologies Research Hub. The Hub will address the technological leaps required to build safer, healthier, more resilient environments against bioaerosols. The New E3 Research Hub sits within the Wolfson Centre for Biodetection Instrumentation Research.

Main duties and responsibilities

You will undertake a comprehensive programme of research as part of the Particle Instruments & Diagnostics Research Group (PID) within the Wolfson Centre for Biodetection Instrumentation Research (WCBIR) and funded Future Biodetection Technologies Hub (FBTH). The details of the program will be developed in close cooperation with colleagues at the University of Hertfordshire and relevant partner organisations.

In addition to driving this research forward, you will actively pursue external funding opportunities. This will involve preparing detailed proposals and applications for grants from prominent funding bodies, such as the European Commission and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). These efforts will aim to secure the necessary resources to support and expand the scope of our research activities, ensuring that our work remains at the cutting edge of the field.

Skills and experience required

You will have significant experience in aerosol testing, including hands-on know-how in particles launching and detection tests, an understanding of the requirement for aerosol collection, aerosol detection/classification and associated instrumentation and a familiarity with setting up and testing aerosol detection &/or classification instruments.

Proven experience working in a research environment is a fundamental requirement. While postdoctoral experience in a related field is highly desirable, the ideal candidate will be eager to elaborate on the newest research results and/or instrument designs, improve the ideas and test them by implementation.

Qualifications required

You will be educated with a Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification) in physics, engineering, or a discipline closely related to aerosol science and a PhD (or equivalent level 8 qualification) in physics, biomedical sciences, bioengineering, aerosol science, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

Please view the job description and person specification and annex for a full list of the duties and essential criteria. Please attach a personal statement showing clearly how your skills and experience match the Person Specification.

An appointment to this role may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.

This post cannot be visa sponsored unless the applicant has a PhD / Doctorate.
