About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Institute for Developmental & Regenerative Medicine in the Department of Paediatrics as our Institute Safety Officer and Laboratory Manager.

You will play an important role in contributing to the goals of the Institute by establishing yourself as the local expert and working with senior staff to take the lead in matters of Health and Safety throughout the Department, and ensuring an excellent safety culture.

You will be responsible for implementing the University’s health and safety policies and departmental rules, and will build relationships with laboratory managers from a range of research groups. Your work will include chairing committees, drafting and implementing polices and risk assessments, and monitoring laboratory and workplace practices.

You will be working in a growing department within the Medical Sciences Division. The Department of Paediatrics is a world leader in child health research and hosts internationally renowned research programmes in drug development, gastroenterology, haematology, HIV, immunology, neuroimaging, neuromuscular diseases and vaccinology.

This position is offered full-time on a permanent contract.

This role meets the criteria for a UK Skilled Worker visa.

About you

The successful candidate will have a qualification in health & safety (e.g. NEBOSH General Certificate) and extensive experience in risk management within a laboratory setting. You will have proven ability to promote safe working practices within a scientific environment and strong awareness of chemical and biological safety protocols. You will have excellent interpersonal and observational skills, a strong team-working ethos, and proven project management skills and experience.

About the department

The Department of Paediatrics holds the Athena Swan Gold award, acknowledging its innovative policies and practices.

We encourage staff to develop their skills by offering all staff ten paid days of professional development (pro rata) each year and have a policy where staff can apply to receive funding for further training courses to support their professional development.
