University of Oxford - Physics

Applications are invited for a person to Lead the Assembly, Integration and Testing of the Spectrographs for HARMONI, an international collaboration to design and build the first light spectrograph for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT).

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration 36 months, with the possibility of extension for 3 years.

HARMONI is an integral field spectrograph (hyper-spectral imager), assisted by adaptive optics, for the world’s largest telescope – the 39 m ELT. It will revolutionise astronomical observations at near-infrared wavelengths, thanks to its unique combination of exquisite spatial resolution and superb sensitivity.

We are seeking an experienced instrumentation engineer/scientist to Lead the Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration and Test (MAIT) for the Spectrograph work package within the HARMONI consortium. You will provide co-ordination, and guidance to the spectrograph technical team throughout these phases, culminating in the delivery of four, fully cryo-tested spectrograph assemblies to UKATC, Edinburgh.
Applicants should possess a Masters or Doctoral qualification in Physics / Engineering and substantial experience in building and commissioning cryogenic instruments. They should have experience with prototype development and testing, aimed at increasing the maturity level (TRL) of technology.

Experience in testing and fine alignment of opto-mechanical components will be an advantage.

The applicant should have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. They should work well in a large international team environment.

The role is project focussed, and there is no requirement to participate in teaching or other academic duties.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Dr Edgar Castillo (edgar.castillodominguez@physics.ox.ac.uk).

Only applications received before midday 13 September 2024 can be considered. You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.
