Research Associate in Emerging Semiconductor Physics

Imperial College London

Location: London
Salary: £43,003 to £56,345 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 13th August 2024
Closes: 10th September 2024
Job Ref: NAT01797

Location: South Kensington Campus

About the role:

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join Echoes Lab (Electrical Characterisation of Emerging Semiconductors) led by Dr Julie Euvrard in the Department of Physics, and part of the Centre for Processable Electronics (CPE) community. In your project, you will provide the background for the use of Hall effect in organic semiconductors using a highly sensitive setup to access charge transport properties, enrich our understanding of these materials, and advance the field of organic electronics. The post is part of an EPSRC funded award.

In this role, you will carry out research projects in emerging semiconductor characterisation, submit publications to refereed journals, undertake project management, contribute to the supervision of PhD and Master students, and help with the organisation of research within Echoes Lab.

Echoes Lab’s mission is to enable efficient, sustainable, and affordable energy harvesting and storage technologies. Our values, conscientiousness, benevolence, and passion, define how we approach science, research, and collaboration.

What you would be doing:

You will carry out experimental research and develop models to extract valuable information from advanced Hall effect measurements. Experimental work will include the design and fabrication of thin films and gated Hall devices to perform electrical (including Hall effect), optical, and material characterisation. You will develop models relying on our current understanding of organic semiconductor physics to enable quantitative Hall analysis in semiconductors with mixed hopping and band-like transport.

What we are looking for:

You will apply the experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired to further our understanding of charge transport in organic semiconductors, with a focus on prominent compounds for solar energy applications

In addition to your research project, you will contribute to the smooth running of the group’s laboratories, assist in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and help develop a healthy lab culture within Echoes Lab.

We expect the post holder to be self-motivated with a strong sense of curiosity, an appetite for teamworking and the ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary scientists. Research integrity and conscientiousness will be considered essential.

Essential requirements:

  • Hold a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience of research in transport and/or optoelectronic properties of semiconducting materials.
  • Practical experience in a broad range of techniques including sample processing and electrical, optical, and material characterisation.
  • Practical experience within a research environment and publication in relevant and refereed journals.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor physics including charge transport and optoelectronic properties.
  • Knowledge of research methods.

In addition, desirable requirements include:

  • Experience of research in organic semiconductors or other emerging semiconductors
  • Experience of dealing with collaborators within and outside the university
  • Experience of Hall effect characterisation.
  • Experience of developing experimental set-ups to characterise charge transport and/or optoelectronic properties.
  • Experience of writing codes to control instruments and collect data.
  • Knowledge of the theory of electronic structure and interactions in organic semiconductors.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: Gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
