Main duties and responsibilities

The Lecturer in Languages will teach German and/or French at a variety of levels on a range of Undergraduate and/or Postgraduate programmes (A1 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). They will also have the capacity to teach Spanish to A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They will employ a range of pedagogic methods appropriate to lectures, seminars and sessions in both face-to face and online environments and prepare and disseminate appropriate learning and teaching materials including managing course portals on the University’s Virtual Learning Environment, as well as provide effective feedback, support and guidance to students. 

The successful candidate will also be expected to work closely with the CASE and Languages team, coordinating and monitoring the organisation, content, and quality of modules, including undertaking the role of module leader, carrying out teaching and assessment related duties in accordance with the Hertfordshire Business School and the University’s guidelines. They will communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of staff in the School and across the University as appropriate, and participate in the School’s administrative processes including exam boards, programme committees, quality assurance procedures, student recruitment, admissions and study abroad. 

Members of the Languages team share an ethos of engaging in critical reflection on practice as a basis of improving performance and they will therefore be expected to undertake relevant scholarly activity in non-teaching time and participate in staff development including in-house training and sharing learning and teaching good practice.

Skills and experience required

This role requires experience of teaching German and/or French to advanced level and a good knowledge and understanding of contemporary socio-cultural topics, (for example, culture, politics, sociology, business studies, tourism), relating to countries where the target language is spoken. Native or near-native proficiency in spoken and written French and/or German, together with proficiency in Spanish to at least B2 level of the CEFR is essential.

In addition, up-to-date knowledge and understanding of best practice in language learning and teaching is essential, as is the ability to inspire and motivate students from a range of different backgrounds and disciplines, in particular non-specialist language learners. The successful candidate will have excellent organisational and communication skills and be able to work on their own initiative as well as contribute effectively as part of a team.

Qualifications required

You will be educated with an honours degree or equivalent in French and/or German, or a languages related subject if a native speaker of the specialist language. A teaching qualification or relevant experience in teaching Languages and a master’s degree in a relevant discipline are essential.
