The role
The Department of English at the University of Bristol invites applications for a Lectureship in English Literature. This full-time fixed-term post will focus on undergraduate teaching and related administrative support in post-medieval literatures across taught programmes in English, from 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2025.
What will you be doing?
You will contribute seminars and other teaching across undergraduate programmes in the Department of English. These will include one first year core unit (Approaches to Poetry, Critical Issues), one or more survey units Literature 1550-1740, Literature 1740-1900 and Literature 1900-present and, depending on your area(s) of expertise, may include Year 3 options on Eighteenth Century Prose Fiction or Victorian Fiction. You will be able to teach flexibly across the English curriculum as required, and ability to teach interdisciplinary units (Writing for Art) may be an advantage. You will supervise undergraduate dissertations and take responsibility for a share of administration at Department or School level, including marking and assessment and personal tutoring. You will engage in scholarship relevant to your area of research.

You will have knowledge and expertise relevant to teaching English Literature at University level and have a relevant qualification (PhD passed or submitted by 1 September 2024). You will have a record of experience teaching undergraduate seminars, be committed to enthusing and supporting a diverse student body, and to developing your teaching practice and administrative skills into new areas (e.g., personal tutoring, dissertation supervision). You will be an early career academic looking to extend your experience by playing an active role in all aspects of the life of the Department of English, including engaging in scholarship.
