About us

The King’s College London Department of Informatics, jointly with the Department of Engineering and the Department of Geography, are looking to appoint a Research Assistant on Spatial Data Analytics for Delivery Logistics. The recruited applicant will work in Bush House, Strand Campus.

About the role

This position is part of a research project on enhancing the operation of delivery services that rely on sustainable transport modes, e.g. cargo bikes, electric vehicles, and active mobility. The project is implemented collaboratively by members of staff in the Dept of Informatics, Dept of Engineering, and Dept of Geography of King’s College London, as well as partners from other academic institutions and businesses. The recruited applicant will support the project with data science outcomes that will be used for sustainable delivery logistics. 

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed-term contract until April 2025. 

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Minimum MSc degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Related Discipline.
  2. Strong programming skills in Python, R, or similar languages, with experience in geospatial libraries (e.g. Geopandas, GDAL) and visualisation libraries (Matplotlib, Seaborn).
  3. Ability to interpret patterns in spatiotemporal and geographic data, e.g. trends, correlations, distributions.
  4. Familiarity with machine learning techniques and their application to spatial data using libraries such as Sklearn, Pytorch, and/or Tensorflow.
  5. Proficiency in writing and verbally communicating in English.

Desirable criteria

  1. Genuine interest in environmental sustainability.
  2. Understanding of e-commerce, delivery logistics, and urban planning.
  3. Familiarity with logistics optimization methodologies, e.g. integer programming, metaheuristics, algorithms.

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
